During 2006, R&H was contracted by the Hatch, Mott MacDonald and Guba “HMG” Joint Venture to conduct a pre-feasibility study on the entire Transnet Freight Rail network. The aim of this study is to determine the current installed rail infrastructure network capacity and to develop a 30 year investment strategy and plans that will be able to cater for future South African transportation needs. The output of the study is a “30 Year National Rail Infrastructure Plan”.

Moatize Coal Project

Purpose : To conduct feasibility studies into train operations and th detailed design of the relocation of the existing railway line
Duration : September 2007 - January 2008

R&H was appointed by RDMZ a subsidiary of CVRD (Brazil) to assist in various feasibility studies regarding train operations and associated infrastructure along the Moatize-Beira railway line. R&H also completed a detailed design of a 10.3km relocation of the existing railway line connecting Moatize with the Sena line.

Sishen South Direct Link

Involvement : Detail design and procurement
Value : R500 million
Purpose : To design a rail link between the Sishen South Mine and the Sishen Saldanha Ore Line
Duration : April 2007 – April 2008

R&H was appointed by HMG Joint Venture for the design and the procurement of a rail link between the Sishen South Mine and the Sishen Saldanha railway line. The preferred route, which connects directly to the Sishen Saldanha Line (at approximate ch 820km), is approximately 32km long. The line will comprise a single heavy haul line (60kg/m rails on PY concrete sleepers on ballast profile of 1600 m³/km) electrified at 50 kV a.c. and connecting the Sishen Saldanha line with a 1:20 right hand turnout. The line will carry 30 ton axle load traffic of 9 million tons per annum.

Goedgevonden New Private Siding

Involvement : New Private Siding
Value : R134 million
Purpose : To link the Mine's new rapid loadout facility to the export coal line
Duration : April 2007 – November 2008

R&H was appointed by Xstrata Coal SA for the design and construction supervision of a new private siding for their Goedgevonden Mine.

The siding is to take off from the 3rd Coal Line near the Saaiwater Station, including a Domestic Link. It will run from the Saaiwater Station, crosses the Coal line, Saaiwaterspruit, Ogies to Bethal Road (R545) and terminates in a balloon near the proposed Colliery.
